Two student-athletes from Cobre High School have received scholarships from the NMAA Foundation; the first two from Cobre in the foundation's history.
Albuquerque, NM - The New Mexico Athletics Association (NMAA) released a news announcement on March 1, 2024, naming the recipients for their foundation scholarships. The Scholarships awarded number over $75,000 in total. Among the named student-athletes are CHS students Isaac Castillo and Niko Trujillo. CHS Senior Isaac Castillo was awarded the Lt. Col. Cecil Lynn Jr. Memorial Scholarship totaling $1,000 for Isaac Castillo. CHS Senior Nikolas Trujillo was awarded the Austin Denton Memorial Scholarship also totaling $1,000 for Nikolas Trujillo. Both of these scholarships are "At Large Scholarships" meaning that there is no formal application process for them and they are awarded based on students demonstrating the ideals promoted by the NMAA and the NMAA Foundation. They are chosen from the pool of individuals who apply for the other NMAA Foundation Scholarships.
The NMAA Foundation Scholarships have records going back to 2005 of scholarships awarded. As far as the student-athlete awards, Isaac and Niko were the first from Cobre High School to have been awarded scholarships through the foundation.
Isaac Castillo represents Cobre High School with the NMAA through his participation on the CHS Basketball team and Track & Field team.
Nikolas Trujillo represents Cobre High School most recently through his accomplishment as a five-time wrestling state champion; having won his weight class at the NMAA Wrestling State Championships every year since his 8th grade year. He also represents CHS as a member of the CHS Football team, Powerlifting team, and Baseball team.
