From the Bayard Police Department: Juveviles Arrested in Seperate School -- Related Incidents
On March 5 and March 6, 2025, the City of Bayard Police Department responded to two separate
incidents involving threats to school safety, resulting in the arrests of two juveniles.
In the first incident, officers received information regarding a fight at Cobre High School. Additional
intelligence suggested that a weapon may have brought onto school grounds. In response, law
enforcement, with assistance from the Grant County Sheriffs Department, Hurley Police Department,
Deming Police Department, U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives and the New Mexico State Police we were able to conduct a thorough investigation. While
no weapon was found, a tactical vest was recovered. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was
placed on lockdown while personnel from Cobre Staff conducted a search to ensure student and staff
safety. A Juvenile was taken into custody in connection with this incident and charged with the
following:
False Imprisonment, 4th Degree Felony,
Aggravated Battery, A misdemeanor,
Assault on School Personnel, Three counts, A Misdemeanor.
In a separate case, a male juvenile was taken into custody on March 6, 2025 and charged with Bomb
Scares and Shooting Threats Unlawful. Law Enforcement takes all threats seriously, and swift action
was taken to investigate and apprehend the individual responsible. The Grant County Sheriff's
Department also assisted with this case.
We want to assure the community that the safety of our students and schools remain our highest
priority. We encourage parents, students, and staff to remain vigilant and report any suspicious
activity. Threats of violence, whether real or hoaxes, will not be tolerated and will be met with
appropriate legal consequences.

Cobre Families, With an abundance of caution today, we investigated reports of a possible gas leak at Snell Middle School. In response to these concerns, we evacuated all students to Bayard Elementary as a safety measure. After the New Mexico Gas Company conducted their investigation, they have assured us there is no gas leak. We are working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff. At this time, there is no immediate cause for alarm. However, due to protocol, we are required to have a licensed plumber retest the system before students and staff can return to the building. As a result, the students will attend school online starting at 10:00 am tomorrow, January 24th. We will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available. SMS Parents we will be dismissing students from the parent center next to the Bayard Elementary school Buses will resume on the normal schedule. If you chose to come for your child PLEASE come to the parent center to sign them out!
Please be advised SMS families- we determined this afternoon we would be evacuationing SMS for a period to be determined by the Bayard Fire Dept. We are being housed currently at the Bayard Elem. gym. All the staff and students at this time are safe and are at Bayard Elem.

SMS Families please be advised that Snell Middle School Adminstrative team and the Maintenance Dept. confirmed with the Gas company this am that the pressure test and all other tests related to an alleged gas leak have been confirmed to have no IMPACT to Snell students and or teachers. Nothing at this time has been detected with an all clear.
Therefore no one is at risk of exposure and everyone is safe at this time.

Cobre Schools would like to inform all students, their families, and staff that on Friday, January 10th we will be running a regular school day schedule.
Please remember that tomorrow is a school day. At this point the Cobre Consolidated School District has not made a determination whether this will be an in-person school day or online school day. Further updates will be sent out as decisions are made.
Due to deteriorating weather conditions all cobre elementary schools will dismiss at 12:00PM and Snell Middle School and Cobre High School will dismiss at 12:30PM
